File Extension INX
File extension INX refers to a feature in InDesign CS2 and its predecessor InDesign CS that has the capability for file exportation through INX format, or IN-design X-Interchange. A complete description of a given document of InDesign is described by an XML file, which is encompassed in the INX file. The INX file includes all the aspects of an InDesign document, such as colors, text frames, page items, guides, margins and all pages, amongst many other specifications.

It should be noted that this is not alike as exporting XML from a document of InDesign. Only the graphics and text data that are tagged as elements of XML are being exported, in that case. When XML is exported, none of the layout information is inclusive of the XML export. File extension INX has many uses, one of which is saving files originating from InDesign CS2 in a format that can be read by InDesign CS. Due to the fact that INX is XML based, INX can be manipulated by the use of XML tools, like XSLT. Moreover, due to INX being a text file, it is simply stored within databases.

INX can aid in problem solving with InDesign CS2 problem files, especially that were originally PageMaker or QuarkXpress files. The fix for this particular problem is exporting the document like an INX file, then try opening it again. Using the INX format to export a document made in InDesign, choose first ‘File > export’, then choose ‘InDesign Interchange’ from the menu labeled ‘Formats’ in Macs or ‘File Type’ in Windows and finally click on ‘Save’.

File extension INX is listed as an InDesign Interchange File from Adobe, within the category of Page Layout Files. This is the least common of the INX file extensions and it describes completely .INDD files, in XML format. It can be described as being a format that aids InDesign CS2 files to be opened by InDesign CS, after export. All formatting and page content is recognizable to InDesign CS other than for features that are exclusively found in InDesignCS2, some of which include object styles, layered and imported PSD files, anchored objects, tracked changes, SING glyphlets and footnotes

The more common INX format is a compiled script file type in the category of executable files and contains the instructions for the installation of an installer for InstallShield software. The programs that open the INX files in Windows are InstallShield and are not intended to be unlocked independently.
